Chinese Paper Industry
China's Paper Making Capacity Continues to Grow

China has become a leading country in the world's paper production, consumption and import. Industry experts predict this tendency to continue as reflected by its considerable 10 percent annual growth rate. photo

The paper industry in China has unlimited potential and continues to develop at a rapid pace. Recent statistical figures illustrate China's dramatic growth. In 2005 China produced 56 million tons, an increase of more than 13 percent over the previous year and more than a 24 percent increase since 2003. By May of 2006, China produced nearly 26 million tons putting it well on track to exceed the predicted 60 million tons for 2006.

Further, because China's consumption is much greater than its total production, more than 5 tons had to be imported to make up for the shortage. In an effort to keep up with this demand, which is growing more than 9 percent annually, China will have to continue to grow its paper industry for years to come. In fact, in 2004 there were 88 enterprises capable of producing more than 100,000 tons. In 2005 there were 130.

By the year 2010, experts predict at least 200 to 220 enterprises
will be producing 100,000 tons or more,
with a total production of more than 80 million tons.

Despite being a world leader in paper production, China is limited only by its lack of raw materials for making paper and has grown more and more dependent on international pulp suppliers. In 2005, China imported nearly 25 million tons of pulp and waste paper for its mills. This figure will continue to grow in direct relation to its annual production growth rate.
